The National Examinations Council has released the results of the November/December Senior School Certificate Examinations, with 98 per cent of the 234,682 failing to clinch five credits, including English and Mathematics.

But stated that 4,223 candidates got five credits, including English and Mathematics.

The 4,223 candidates formed about 1.80 per cent of those that sat for the examinations, while Kogi, Bauchi and Ondo led others states in the list of examination malpractices.

The Registrar of , Prof. Promise Okpalla, stated this in his address at the national headquarters in Minna on Tuesday.

He added that 234,682 candidates wrote the examinations out of 245,157 that registered.

He said, “Today, formally announces the results of the 2009 Nov/Dec SSCE which held in 1,708 centres spread across the country.

“Inasmuch as education remains a potent tool for attaining national goals, NECO will remain a veritable instrument for measuring educational attainment at the secondary school level, as standards will not be sacrificed for whatever reasons.”

He mentioned the total number of candidates with five credits and above irrespective of subjects as 12,197, representing about 5.2 per cent of those that sat for the examination.

Okpalla also said that 236,613 cases of examination malpractices were discovered in the examinations.

He said while Kogi topped the list of examination malpractices, the Federal Capital Territory, Abia and Oyo states were ranked lowest in infractions.

He regretted the poor performance of the candidates in the examination, saying that there was the need for stakeholders to intensify efforts in ensuring improvement in candidates’ performance.

Okpalla advised candidates that wrote the examination to visit NECO’s website with the same scratch card used in registering to access their results.

This is clear evidence of system collapse and leadership failure. The registrar is not even ashamed of his statement instead of him to resign or delegate somebody to announce the result. By the way, the management of NECO dont pay its examiners good allowance which makes them mark our scripts without zeal.

Its not a surprise, what i thought that might cause the failure is the part on student becos some of them did not prepare well for the exam.In the part of teachers, they are really trying their best its the students that must wake up and put more interest in studying rather than examination malpractices

  18. Jimi Ogunlola says:

The percentage is just too much and not convincing enof. Does it mean a whole 98% of the participants are nt serious? No! I won’t take that.
I believe majority of pple that sit for NECO Nov/Dec already do have experience and because of some deficiencies they enrol for Nov/Dec for a make-up.
    This needs a check.
The concerned body (NECO or Govt) should interfare to put a stop to futher occurence of such.
    This is sad. Abba!

  52. OJO JOHN says:

THE MASS FAILURE OF CANDIDATES THIS YEAR IS AS A RESULT OF STUDENTS INADEQUATE PREPARATION FOR THE EXAM BUT NONETHELESS THE NIGERIA GOVERNMENT SHOULD TRY AND ASSIST THEM SO AS TO HAVE A WAY FORWARD.

  53. ADEYEMI SAMUEL says:

I think the mass failure is as a result of the curroptable attitude of the teacher toward student in defferent center, many candidate were able to attempt the question given to them but they were initiated and distracted by the selfish demand of teacher for free hand to exam malpractice. Government should therefor please find solution to this problem so that it won’t affect those who with there wisdom attemt the exam without involving in malpractice.

  62. Joe says:

It is practically impposible that only 2% passed the NECO Nov/
Dec. 2009 exams. Nigerians are not that dull the way NECO try to portray. I think something is wrong somwhere or that the scripts were not properly marked. Otherwise get all the students to re-write the exam without additional cost and get the result out promptly. Another BIG problem with NECO is that they could provide reliable website for the students to check their results. The http://www.nigerianexam.org provided is fake. Nawa oh. Is this another version of corruption?

    Joe
