SPORADIC shooting, ballot snatching and violence characterised the Ejigbo state constituency rerun election in Osun State, on Saturday, as no fewer than eight supporters of the Action Congress were attacked in two polling units.

This was a sharp contrast to the peaceful rerun election for the vacant Etsako Contral Constituency seat in the Edo State House of Assembly also held on Saturday amidst tight security.

The public affairs officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Osun State announced the Peoples Democratic Party won the election with 7,451 votes which was closely followed by 6,402 of the AC.

The polling units where ballot box snatching, violence and shooting occurred in Ejigbo included Unit 4, Ward 7, Ile-Ilupeju and Ward 2, Unit 12 near Obelawo Garage, in Ejigbo town.

The AC agent in Unit 4, Ward 7 in Ile-Ilupeju, Alamu Moshood, alleged that PDP thugs stormed the unit, shot into the air and carted away the ballot box.

In ward 2, unit 12, where thugs invaded at 2.45pm, no fewer than six persons suffered machete injuries when thugs stormed and carted away the ballot box.

Moshood, who spoke with our correspondent, explained that voting was going on smoothly before PDP thugs invaded the polling unit, disrupted voting and carted away the ballot box.

He said, “The thugs are students of a higher institution in the state. They came in two buses and two cars. They lined up and pretended as if they came to vote. All of a sudden they ran to their vehicles and brought out guns and machetes. They caught everybody unawares.

“They returned to the House of PDP member in the House of Representatives, Mr. Bade Falade, where they came from. They are not indigenes or residents of Ejigbo.”

But Falade, who spoke with our correspondent on the phone, denied the allegation, which he described as a tissue of lies.

Falade said, “I have personally contested and won three elections in Ejigbo, I did not rig or engage in violence. Is it now that a member of my party is contesting that I will engage in violence? I‘ll rather spend my money to better the lots of the people of Ejigbo rather than spend it on importing thugs from a higher institution to disrupt election.”

A victim of the violence in unit 12, ward 2, Aremu Mohammed, alleged that some PDP thugs stormed the unit and were resisted by AC agents, adding that he was wounded when he was trying to protect the ballot box from being snatched.

Aremu said, “The thugs wounded Iya Isa, Jimoh, Richard and two others when they were trying to protect the ballot box from being carted away.”

Another victim, Salau Ahmed, said he was wounded in the fracas when thugs stormed unit 4, ward 7.

An AC chieftain and former member of the House of Representatives, Chief Mudasiru Hussain, who voted at Beula primary school, unit 1, ward 3, Ejigbo, said there was no violence at the unit.

Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr John Dansu, visited the units where violence and ballot box snatching took place, and he said that elections in the two units will be cancelled.

The Director, Research and Strategy, Osun AC, Mr. Sunday Akere, who monitored the election on behalf of his party, urged INEC and the police to investigate cases of election violence in unit 4, ward 7 and unit 12, ward 2.

The Commissioner of Police, Osun Command, Mr. Solomon Olusegun, said the election was free and fair, adding that the command would announce the number of election violence suspects next week.

He said, ”We cannot make public the names of suspects when the election is still going on. I‘ve been in Ejigbo since 9am I‘m still there as at 6pm. We are fully on the ground here.”

Results released so far from the collation centre at the Headquarters of the Etsako Local Government Area, Fugar, indicated that the candidate of the AC, Mr. Johnson Oghuma had an early lead over his PDP counterpart, Mr. Chris Umogbai, in the electionwhich held in 10 wards and 73 polling units.

Anxiety over the possibility of widespread violence in the election had increased when soldiers attached to the Joint Security Outfit code named ”Operation Thunderstorm” were withdrawn early in the week there by giving room to speculation that their withdrawal was not unconnected with plots to rig the election.

But the Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday, invited the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, to the Presidential Villa, and directed him to ensure that the election was peaceful.

Jonathan was also said to have warned that he would hold Onovo responsible for any breakdown of law and order during the election.

However, an Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu, led 1,6000 policemen to the exercise ensuring that the elections were devoid of violence.

The police who had earlier arrested the manger of a Benin Hotel and 10 other persons with 20 AK4, 50 pump action rifle and live ammunition on Friday, also arrested eight persons who claimed to be agents of the All Nigeria Peoples Party at Imhokhena Primary School, Ogbonna, when they were found to be fake.

Ogbonna is the home town of the Chairman of the PDP in Edo State, Chief Dan Orbih.

Apart from preventing moves by some party supporters to snatch electoral materials at Ogbonna and Anagbette, a riverrine community, security operatives were said to have effected the replacement of 20 unaccredited members of staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

There was an impressive turn out of voters as people trooped out in their numbers to cast their votes as early as 9a.m in centres like Emhakhena Primary School and the Fugar where the Principal Secretary to the Vice President, Dr. Mike Ogiadhome, who was also a former Deputy Governor of the state voted at 10.19am.

Prominent indigenes from the area including a former number two citizen, Vice Admiral Mike Akhigbe, Senator Albert Legogie, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Kaduna Eboigbidin, were of the view that the election was impressive with what they saw at the time they were speaking with journalists.

Security operatives did not leave anything to chance as they mounted a roadblock at the border between Etsako Central and Etsako Central Local Government Areas, where they subjected people to serious searches.

Also, the state governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, was at the constituency.

Edo State Government has dispatched a team to evacuate its indigenes trapped in the mayhem in Jos, Plateau State in which scores of people have been killed in a brawl sparked off by ethnic-cum religious differences.

Led by the Director General of the State Liason Office, Abuja, Mr Tony Aiyejina, the group is to ensure the safe passage of its citizens and resettle them away from harm’s way.

Also, Abia state government directed the immediate evacuation of all Abia indigenes, especially students of Abia State origin holed up in troubled Plateau State.

Chief Theodore .A.Orji , through his Chief Press Secretary to Abia State Governor, Mr. Kingsley Emereuwa, said the government sent two luxury buses with armed Policemen to be stationed at Abuja Hostel, University of Jos to commence evacuation of Abians from the crisis area from today, Saturday January 23, 2010. They are to call President Abia State student in plateau state, Sam Ogazi with GSM No. 08035481667.

Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole says it is the responsibility of Government to protect the life and properties of its citizens just as he expressed confidence in the ability of the police to ensure a peaceful election in Etsako Central Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

The Governor who also announced a restriction on movement of persons in the area from 7:00am to 6:00pm in Etsako Central during the period of the election spoke during a visit to him by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police Felix Ogbaudu and the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the State, Ahmed Raji.

According to the Governor, “as you would have noticed, there a lot of anxiety, worries. People are concerned for different reasons. People are concerned about stories, allegations and counter-allegations about the deployment of firearms that might be deployed in a way that would endanger lives and properties.”

He however assured the electorate not to entertain fears as the security agencies are in the position to guarantee law and order.

He noted that with the presence of the police in the area, “we feel we are more secured irrespective of the stories and allegations. I have confidence that officers of the Nigeria Police, like the rest of us, recognize that Nigeria is greater than any individual and must put the country first.”

He warned that the Police have the mandate to deal decisively with anyone with plans to disrupt the election. He also urged the Resident Electoral Commissioner to ensure that the rules of the game are adhered with.

He said: “the beauty of democracy is that if you don’t have to give reasons why you are voting for one person or the other. I am sure the people can’t wait to vote.”

On the restriction of movement, the Governor said: “there will be a restriction on movement from 7:00am to 6:00pm in Etsako Central. I’m sure this will help the Police to ensure that those wandering about, those not particularly involved in the election are put away by the Police.”

IT was a theatre of the absurd yesterday at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, venue of the meeting between members of the National Working Committee(NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Anambra State stakeholders as they engaged in counter accusations which later developed into a free for all fight by the Anambra PDP members.

At least one person was injured during the fracas with the two screening machines at the main entrance to the hall pulled off.

At the end of the fracas, immediate past Central Bank Governor,CBN, Chukuma Soludo emerged candidate of the PDP for the February 6, 2010 Anambra State governorship election.

There were strong indications that the national leadership of the party was bent on forwarding his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in time to beat yesterday’s deadline for the submission of candidates by political parties contesting the election.

According to a source at the party, his choice was said to have been endorsed by members of the National working Committee(NWC) led by the party’s National Chairman, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, along with that of Senator Emma Anosike as his running mate.

Their emergence followed a meeting of the NWC which was held for the purpose of picking the candidate as a result of the inability of the party to successfully conduct its state primaries having been scuttled by a court injunction restraining it from going ahead with the process.

The incident occurred when irate party members from the state, many of who did not fall into the list of invited delegates, stormed the venue and resisted attempts by security details to stop them from entering, just as they were apparently suspicious of the intention of the national leadership of the party.

The forceful removal of the doors by one of the delegates led to the National Legal Adviser of the party, Chief Olusola Oke sustaining injuries. He was was struck in the head with an empty bottle of water by another angry delegate who shouted abuses on him as he emerged from the venue of the meeting.

The meeting which first started at the National Secretariat of the Party in Wuse Zone 5 was later, due to security reasons, moved to Yar’Adua Centre where the PDP National Chairman, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, said there was adequate security arrangement for them.

True to his words, the place could be mistaken for a war zone with heavily armed policemen, two Armoured Personel Carrier vehicles with registration numbers PF 5225LA and NPF 1206 C respectively and stationed at the entrance of the venue.

The policemen were led by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Ivy Okoronkwo and the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, John Haruna.

But Ogbulafor’s last minute rush to get a candidate for the Anambra State election ended in a deadlock, just as it was gathered at the time of this report that the leadership of the party had to relocate to a secret venue to meet and finally come out with a name of its candidate since the delegates could not the party a candidate as its flagbearer.

The party attempted to encourage the 47 aspirants to agree on a consensus candidate among themselves but this move also hit the rocks at the meeting.

It was also gathered that they left the venue of the meeting to brief President Yar’Adua before submitting a name to INEC.

The deadlock occurred as gathered because there were conflicting interests, while the people of Anambra insisted on producing a candidate, the leadership of the party said it would hand_pick a candidate to contest the election, even as it was said that the grouse of the Anambra politicians is that they feel the party wants to impose a candidate on them and they said they will not accept such imposition.

Olisa Metu National Vice Chairman, South East said at the gathering before Ogbulafor led other members of the NWC to the hall,“what we the people of Anambra is saying is that no outsider can choose a candidate for us. We the people of Anambra know what we want.”

It was also gathered that during the closed door meeting, those who spoke were alleged to have hurled insults at members of the National Working Committee, but the NWC members were said to have kept mute through the period as they really exhibited high level of maturity.

Those who spoke were Senators Annie Okonkwo, Joy Emodi, Onyiabo Obi, Chief J.A. Okonkwo, the founding Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Dan Chuke, former Minister, Hon. C.I.D. Maduagbo, Professor Ilochi Okafor, former Vice chancellor , Nnamdi azikiwe University, among others.

Before the commencement of the meeting proper, all former Chairmen of the Party met with Chief Dan Ulasi presenting their position that former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme’s name be submitted to INEC pending when a proper primaries would be conducted at least in the next one month or six weeks and against the backdrop that there were two court injunctions stopping the conduct of state congress and with a letter from INEC that the state has no Executive in place.

According to them, Ekwueme’s name would then be substituted before the real election and to meet the December 12 deadline for INEC for substitution. But Ekwueme however is said to be out of the country at the moment.

Others proposed that a mini_delegate election be conducted here in Abuja and such a name presented to INEC before it closes its gate and some others insisted that Andy Uba be given the party ticket.

While the three groups stuck to their position, the National Working Committee [NWC] was said to be appealing to those at the meeting to allow it pick a candidate to carry its flag.

The tone of the meeting was set earlier on at national headquarters of the party when the National Chairman of the party, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor announced the party’s decision to switch the venue to YarÁdua Centre instead of the Wadata Plaza headquarters of the party as earlier advertised.

Many of the delegates who had already gathered at the main hall of the secretariat resisted the attempt as they shouted down the announcement from Prince Ogbulafor.
Undaunted, the National Chairman and members of the NWC left the hall and all the delegates eventually relocated to the new venue.

Speaking, Ogbulafor who lamented over the crisis in the party in the state, however stressed that several attempts to select a candidate for the party had been made but they have proved abortive saying therefore that the meeting was summoned to deal with the problem once and for all.

“We have invited you here today to share a moment of seriousness to see how we can jointly come up with a candidate to represent our party. That is exactly why we have invited you. Therefore, it is a meeting with stakeholders of Anambra State and please, we want it to be as quiet and smooth as possible. We don’t want any disturbance, any misunderstanding; any fracas.”

At the YarÁdua Centre, h e pleaded with them not to disgrace him as one of them who hails from Ibo land saying “my dear brothers and sisters, I am one of you. Don’t let me down and please, don’t disgrace me.”

The National Chairman who warned that other political parties were mocking the PDP, said he has never be at the negative side of history and not prepared to start with the case of Anambra, wondered whether some of the people causing the confusion were working for opposition, just as he was confident that the candidate of the party would emerge from among the aspirants gathered for the meeting and therefore requested for their cooperation.
Source: vanguardngr.com
JOIN THE FASTEST GROWING NIGERIAN FORUM

The government however said nothing was paid and that the kidnappers released Yayok when they realized that government was not ready to play ball.
The Deputy Governor of Kaduna State Mr Patrick Yakowa and the State Commissioner for Information Alhaji Saidu Adamu with the Kidnapped SSG Mr Waje Yayok(right) at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna after his release in Port-Harcourt: Photo by Olu Ajayi.

Yayok had arrived Government House in an ash coloured 406 Peugeot Saloon car with registration number Abuja BF 507 YAB at about 12.58 pm and was taken straight to the Deputy Governor’s office where he briefed senior government officials, security officials and leadership of the ruling people’s Democratic Party (PDP) on his experiences while in captivity.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Tambari Yabo Mohammed, went into Deputy Governor’s office to meet other government officials.

About two and a half hours later, the Deputy Governor, Mr. Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, re-appeared with the SSG, the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Saidu Adamu, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Alhaji Umar Sani, and told newsmen that Yayok would answer some questions after Alhaji Sani had read a prepared statement on the kidnap saga.

However, this was not to be as Yayok only thanked God, the government and people of the state and the press for putting pressure on his kidnappers which eventually led to his release.

Initial report was that Yayok was released by his kidnappers in Port Harcourt would travel by road to Kaduna but the government said that the SSG was freed in Warri, Delta state, and later flown to Abuja before being driven to Kaduna.

Earlier in the morning, the Anglican Bishop of Kaduna Diocese, Bishop Idowu Fearon, had addressed a press conference where he said that Yayok’s kidnap was political.

He said that when kidnapping started in the country, the north regarded it as a south-south affair but stressed that Nigerians should know that the country is now like a village and that what happens in one area would affect the other areas.

The statement by Sani said, “gentlemen of the press you will recall that sometimes ago to be precise on Tuesday 22nd September 2009, after much inquiries about the whereabouts of the SSG from Members of the Public, we issued a statement stating that the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) was on official assignment to the southern part of the State.

“Subsequently, the next day after fruitless effort to locate his whereabouts, he was declared missing by the Kaduna State Police Command.

“Thereafter, the security agencies intensified efforts to locate him and his whereabouts.
“Their efforts paid off after frustrating the assailants who were later to be identified as abductors of the SSG for ransom. The fact that no ransom was paid and the toll was telling on them frustrated their efforts and led them to the release of the SSG.

“The SSG was taken to Warri in Delta state where he was held hostage for a better part of the time he was held captive.

“The combined efforts of the SSS and the Police gave the abductors sleepless nights and they felt that the security agencies were closing in on them and that soon the noose will be tightened around their necks.

“The only option left was for the immediate release of the SSG who is currently in our warm embrace.

“At this juncture, it is pertinent for us to dispel the rumours going the rounds that the SSG was abducted in open places and to state that the incidence took place at the junction of Studio 40-40 along Barnawa-Narayi junction very close to the residence of the SSG.

“He was to proceed on official assignment the next morning to the southern part of the State when some uniformed men fully clad in Army camouflage numbering about ten (10) abducted himself and four other vehicles including a Toyota Camry, a Jeep, the vehicle of the SSG an End-of- Discussion and a Mercedez Benz that were forced on a convoy to drive and proceed straight to Delta State that night.

“It should also be noted that the SSG was a victim of circumstance and that the operation was not targeted at him or any agent of the State Government.

“He was only discovered to be an SSG along the way courtesy of his identification card. He was abducted and was headed straight to Delta State where he was until his release. He was received in Benin and returned to Kaduna by our security operatives notably members of the SSS hale and hearty.”

Soon after Alhaji Sani had read the statement, Mr. Yayok was sandwiched into the Deputy Governor’s official jeep and both the SSG and Mr Yakowa drove to his house.

THE verbal exchange between former Governor of Delta state, Chief James Ibori and former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, is far from over, as Ibori yesterday, lashed out on Ribadu, calling him a serial liar.

Ribadu, on his part, challenged Ibori to return his alleged loot to the state coffers and make peace with God.
Chief Ibori, in a press release yesterday, said: “Ribadu engaged self-glorification in his press statement published on September 27, 2009, taking an ignoble flight of fancy instead of addressing the issues I raised in my media chat of the preceding Friday, which, by the way, did not focus solely on Ribadu. The indecorum and name-calling in his language was not surprising too, they have combined to become the Ribadu signature tune.
I never bribed Ribadu

“Yes, I maintain that I never, repeat never, bribed or attempted to bribe Ribadu, who, always loose with the facts, tried to hoodwink the public by alleging that I was speaking after two years of being investigated. Yet, the bribery allegation I reacted to publicly, was the one he made in a witness statement in London as recently as August 26th, 2009.

I had to reply to that one publicly because, as Ribadu himself knows, that allegation will not be tested by any trial, as no charge whatsoever, whether related to that bribery allegation or not, has ever been leveled against me in any court of law in the entire United Kingdom. His allegation of two years ago, which I have not publicly reacted to, is being tested in court.

“I expected Ribadu to disprove the contradictions I pointed out in his Nigerian and London statements as well as those of his Director of Operations and second-in-command at the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, and Mr. James Garba, a Central Bank of Nigeria staff seconded to EFCC. Instead, he employed his usual rabble-rousing antics of name calling, which was the trademark of his reign as EFCC chairman.

“On my position on resource control and the driving principle behind my determination to redress the injustice done to the people of the Niger Delta, Ribadu asked “if it is in keeping with his promise that he became a billionaire overnight on behalf of the suffering masses of Delta State.” Ribadu should know that before I became Governor, my collective wealth was substantial.

Even the London Metropolitan Police admitted in their own witness statement filed in court that one of my private companies earned in excess of $5 million annually. I have been the most investigated Governor in Nigeria and the EFCC and London Metropolitan Police are in possession of my Account statements from the Bank of Austria, Merrill Lynch, Citibank (I was a CitiGold memberùa club of high net worth customers) and Barclays Bank before I became a Governor.

Both the EFCC under Ribadu and the London Metropolitan Police have dubiously refused to exhibit these Account statements to maintain their lie.
How Ribadu plotted to unseat Yar’Adua

“Second, Nuhu Ribadu must be a serial liar, to attempt to deny that he approached me to help unseat the present President. This is one of his numerous on-going attempts to recruit both local and international friends to undermine President Yar’Adua’s administration.

The persons he approached, including me, are still alive and they have given testimonies to security agencies. Ribadu even contacted a high-ranking member of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with complaints that a “sick Yar’Adua” should not be allowed to remain in office, and also wanted a serving judge and member of the electoral panel to convince the team of INEC officials to concur with his evil plot that the ballot papers were not serially numbered – to damage Yar’Adua’s defence. And he did this with some of his foreign friends who, to date, still wish President Yar’Adua dead.

“Thirdly, Ribadu said: “I am also open to his friendship but that will never be at the expense of my loyalty to my fatherland and commitment to transparency and honesty in public office.” Ribadu should shut up and stop boasting about having been Nigeria’s anti-corruption Czar.

He compromised himself, politicising his office, and teamed up with politicians to influence National Assembly members in the failed third-term tenure elongation gambit. He was a politician, not anti-corruption fighter.

“Ribadu should wait for the persecution by him and his London Metropolitan Police friends of my associates to break open in a full trial. Then I will enclose copious documentary evidence to substantiate every claim I have made. The opportunistic and brazen-faced Ribadu is nothing but a fraudulent “anti- corruption Czar” who operated with instruments of blackmail.

“He should tell the world who paid for his hotel accommodation at 47 Park Street, Mayfair, London where he stayed on his way from San Francisco, USA. Additionally, Ribadu went about soliciting for support from those he claimed to be investigating, towards a non-existent EFCC Football Club
He lobbied me to become IGP

“Worst of all, Ribadu denies that he lobbied me to be Inspector-General of Police, (IGP). I never expected him to admit that fact. But if he did not approach me to be IGP, at what point did he inform me of his intention to seek appointment into a narcotics control arm of the United Nations?

That day, he appealed to me to keep it away from the public, but surprisingly, former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, told me, a few days after, that Mr. Ribadu was indeed seeking for the office and he heard this from the former World Bank boss, Paul Wolfensohn. Of course, Ribadu also pursued Kalu everywhere in the name of investigation, while, all the time hiding evidence that Kalu had millions of dollars in foreign accounts before he became Abia State Governor.

Furthermore, that Ribadu claims to have deposited $15 million at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is not, and cannot, be proof that I gave that or any sum of money to him. Also, what greater character could there be than he, an architect of a third-term tenure for a President whose constitutional entitlement is for two terms only, and who tried to induce, harass, embarrass and humiliate National Assembly members to support the project.

“Now, Ribadu is using colonial police in London to settle petty political scores in Nigeria, and he, a lawyer, denigrates and disrespects our judicial system by constant allegation of judicial incompetence. My advice to Ribadu is that President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has been elected the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, by the Grace of Almighty God.

Ribadu should respect the mandate Nigerians gave to Yar’Adua and stop hopping from one international capital of the world to another like a junketing gadabout, maligning the elected President of his country.

“Ribadu also ranted he would use the London Metropolitan Police to send a certain Nigerian businessman to prison for alleged money laundering because he wrote and published a damaging piece about former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He actually tried to but only succeeded in wasting British taxpayer’s money as the businessman was discharged and acquitted on the orchestrated money laundering charges. My question is, was that businessman a public officer in Nigeria? Was it not his masters’ bidding to go after that man? May I also ask if Otunba Mike Adenuga, the eminently popular business mogul and chairman of Globacom, whom he targeted and hounded into exile, is also a public officer?

“The same Ribadu, master-minded the ex-convict plot against me. One night after a meeting of the co-conspirators to frame and denigrate me at all costs, Ribadu called the businessman to “shoot his mouth” as usual.

That same night, the benefactor phoned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar alerting him of Ribadu’s plot

against me.

“Sooner Nigerians would know how Ribadu purchased by proxy the shares that he owns in his friends’ companies. Ribadu would then have to tell the world whether he bought those shares with proceeds from his salary. No wonder he has failed to declare his assets – which is tantamount to a crime.
Ribadu still my friend

Finally, Ribadu, on our friendship, said: “Since I couldn’t see you when I visited Lagos recently why don’t you visit me in London to catch up with your other friends”? I will accept his invitation to visit London as soon as he can prove to me that the matter in London is not driven by malice and vindictiveness.

Let me remind Ribadu my friend, that by now I am too smart to be caught in a political game which himself and his collaborators in the London Metropolitan Police are playing. If he indeed believes that the trial of the women they have held hostage in London is not political, he should allow the process of the court to prove that, instead of pronouncing people guilty even before they appear in court as he usually did as EFCC chairman in Nigeria.

He is not a staff of the London Metropolitan Police. He is not a member of the Crown Prosecution Service. Neither is he a member of the jury nor the Judge in the matter.

“If you, Nuhu Ribadu, a Nigerian in London, think you have the right to invite me to London to face some trumped up charges, I, a Nigerian with all the rights as a Nigerian, invite you to Nigeria your home country, where you are a pitiable fugitive from justice”.
Ibori should return loot to Delta – Ribadu

Ribadu, however challenged Chief Ibori, to return his alleged loot to the state and make peace with God. Ribadu said Ibori was desperate and would do anything to escape justice.

According to him, “instead of wasting the money of Delta State people that he stole to pay lawyers all over the world, isn’t it better as a ‘Christian’ that he claims to be to return his loot to the people of Delta State and have peace with his God? If he fails to do so, at the appropriate time, no matter how much the Iboris of this world run from the law, they would one day be made to atone for their sundry crimes.

If they are able to bribe their way through in Nigeria and get men and women of questionable character appointed into office to shield themselves from prosecution, they cannot do the same in the United Kingdom and before God. But even in Nigeria, the protection that they enjoy today is temporary.
Ibori desperate to escape justice

“Ibori, just like the others we tried to bring to justice, is desperate and would do anything to escape justice as he has always done. Nothing emphasizes Ibori’s capacity for falsehood and felony than his claim, at the press conference, that I “framed” him for attempting to bribe me with $15 million dollars.

As he told the lie, and as I write this, the $15 million remain as an exhibit deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“It has now become fashionable for all sorts of morally-bankrupt people to try to use me to do one thing or the other. I had it on record, while in office as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that James Ibori was a double convict.

First, as a police officer and also as an anti-corruption campaigner who was committed to doing his part to rid Nigeria of rogues, how could I have been seeking the assistance of a convicted felon for the highest police position in the country? If I wanted to be IG, he would be the last person I will consider to help me.
IGP? Ibori lied

“Any close observer of the events in Nigeria in the last decade would agree that what we were able to achieve as founders and operators of the EFCC was of a more fundamental nature, in the context of our urgent national crisis, than becoming IGP.

It was a waste of time attempting to dignify Mr. Ibori, former governor of Delta State, with a response to the tissue of lies and cheap fabrications that he let loose,” but added that it was “important to set the records straight, particularly against one of those who perpetrated the worst heist against the treasury since Nigeria’s independence.

That Ibori is finally finding his voice after two years since his prosecution both at home and abroad started is a testimony to his desperation as the cases, particularly the ones in the United Kingdom, move toward legal resolution.

“As regards the allegation that Ibori made on the 2007 presidential election petition, let me state clearly that it is totally untrue. However, I am also aware that there is a whole industry of seeking favour from President Umaru Yar’Adua based on the legal tussle over the 2007 presidential election.

Already, many fortune and favour-seekers have imagined many plots and many plotters in their attempt to deceive the man in power that I tried to scuttle the Appeal Court case on the election. Many got offices, positions, and others and even got me out of the EFCC telling this lie to Aso Rock Villa.

“They continue to use it. If Ibori claims that I sought his support to truncate Yar’Adua’s contested victory at the Appeal Court, is he claiming to have the power to influence the judges and pervert the course of justice?” He asked.

It is becoming clear that former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, is not the only one with the desire that he should become Anambra State Governor next year.

Daily Independent learnt at the weekend that after he left the CBN in May, he was stopped from taking up a teaching job at Oxford University in the United Kingdom so as to help redeem the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The architects of the deal are said to include President Umaru Yar’Adua, former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme, and former PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Tony Anenih – all of who decided to do something to re-establish the party in Anambra, which it won in 1999.

Anenih commissioned a study before leaving office and discovered that the party must break away from the past by rooting for a candidate without a blemish who could win elections.

The lot originally fell on former Governor Chris Ngige, who was popular because of his achievements and also because of the successful war he waged against the godfathers in the PDP.

But the attempt to get Ngige back to power failed, according to the source.

Said he: “When the Anenih study was sent to (Ekwueme), founding BoT Chairman, he quickly reached for (Yar’Adua) and other power brokers who asked him to suggest a credible, knowledgeable, non-controversial and well known person.’

“Ekwueme asked the party to lobby Ngige to return to the PDP. But the man gave conditions which the PDP considered very difficult. The conditions included that he be given an automatic nomination.”

Ekwueme then began consultations and thereafter settled for Soludo, who had by then decided to teach at Oxford University and the Brookings Institution, a famous think tank in Washington, United States, currently headed by Strobe Talbot.

Talbot was former President Bill Clinton’s Deputy Secretary of State, who later served as an Editorial Executive at Time magazine.

This was said to have informed the role the personalities played at a highly publicised party organised for Soludo last month ostensibly to mark his tenure at the CBN. There, Ekwueme, Anenih, Yar’Adua’s close friend, C. Mangali, spoke of Soludo’s brilliance and accomplishments.

Anenih informed the gathering that he would not mind changing his name to make him eligible to participate in Soludo’s emergence as Anambra Governor.

“My name is Anenih from Edo State, but I am prepared to become Anene from Anambra State because of Soludo,” declared the former Works and Housing Minister, known as “Mr Fix It” or “Leader” because of his uncanny ways of achieving results.

However, despite reports of the endorsement of the party leadership, Soludo is said to be working towards winning the primaries on his own merit.

“When he officially declared his intention to run last Wednesday in Awka, a crowd of about 80, 000 enthusiastic supporters from all the 326 wards in the state cheered him for several hours.
“Some people thought it was a Presidential campaign rally. He promised in his manifesto to make the state the “Dubai of Africa” if elected Governor,” the source recounted.

PDP Anambra Congress Committee Chairman, Gabriel Suswam, who is Benue State Governor, affirmed in Awka on Sunday that a level playing field will be provided for all aspirants, without preference for anyone, including Soludo.

However, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) said even with that, his party would win the ballot on February 6, 2011.

Ojukwu, accompanied by APGA National Chairman, Victor Umeh, explained to journalists in Enugu that the party would win because of its followership in Anambra, “provided we are working along the right course. If we are going to cheat, anything can happen.”

At least 76 persons have been confirmed dead from a suspected outbreak of an epidemic of cholera in about seven local government councils of Adamawa state.

The strange disease which manifests with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, coughing and mild fever is ravaging communities in seven local government areas, of Mubi, north and south, Maiha, Michika, Madagali, Girie, and Hong in the northern part of the state.
So far, 76 people have died, while 846 are receiving treatment at the various state health establishments in the state.Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Musa Bubakari Kamale, who stated this yesterday after the weekly executive council meeting, said the government had dispatched adequate drugs and a medical response team to attend to those already afflicted with the disease in the affected areas.
He said blood and tissue samples of victims of the disease had been collected and sent to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the University Teaching Hospital Ibadan, France and U.S. for expert analysis to determine the cause and nature of the disease. It would be recalled that the Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Abubakar Isa Ahmadu, had on Monday, alerted the state government on the rampaging epidemic affecting the area when he paid ramadan sallah homage to the governor. The Emir had intimated the governor that there was shortage of drugs and medical personnel in the affected areas and appealed for assistance. The commissioner said the disease may have been caused by filthy environment occasioned by the rainy season and advised people in the affected areas to purify their drinking water as well as keep their environment clean.
