PENGASSAN Threatens To Shut Down Oil Production If FG Does Not Revert Fuel Price

A Nigerian Oil workers union PENGASSAN has threatened to shut down production from Sunday if the federal government fails to revert the price of fuel to 65 Naira. a Nigerian oil workers on Thursday announced they would begin shutting down crude production on Sunday as a nationwide strike and mass protests over soaring fuel prices pushed on.

“From Sunday, we are shutting down,” said Babatunde Ogun, president of the PENGASSAN oil workers union.

Strikes over the move, which has doubled petrol prices, began on Monday.

About 80% of Nigerian state revenues come from oil. It is Africa’s biggest oil exporter and the unrest has helped raise world prices.

The country has little capacity to refine crude oil.

Many poverty-stricken Nigerians see subsidised fuel as the only benefit they get from their country’s oil wealth.

There have been demonstrations across Nigeria since the decision was announced on 1 January.

Petrol prices and transport fares have doubled, and in the four days of strikes tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets around the country to protest.

There have been big protests in the largest city, Lagos and also in Kano, the main city in the north.

On Wednesday, the authorities imposed a 24-hour curfew in Niger state after unrest.

During the violent protests in the state capital Minna, hundreds of rioters set fire to government and political party offices and also targeted the homes of local politicians.

Partial curfews are also in place in the states of Kano, Zamfara, Borno and Oyo.

However, union leaders are due to meet President Goodluck Jonathan shortly for the first time since the strike started.

  1. Babatunde may d almighty God bless u nd ur entire generation 4 making dis dicision, pls do as u av said as quick as posible, because jonatan seems 2 av an iron heart,nd we shal treat him lyk an iron cus we re blacksmiths, jonathan u must obey oo cus u no fit kill us,abi u no sabi say na only wen subsidy dy 4 fuel na him we dy enjoy ham?

  2. Nigeria now is polarized into the good and the bad- Jonathan and the cabals. So when one speaks or act we know where he/she belongs. How does shutting down crude óil production help the masses, if not but to show solidarity to your parteners in the dubious business of milking Nigeria to death. Instead of demanding for íncrease in wages of workers

  3. Jerome you be ashame of yourself making that kind of statement about salary increase instend of subsidy matter. Pengassan are on the rigth parth. Jonathan needs to know that it was the masses that elected him not his cabal!.

  4. How does the government expect the people to cope with the subsidy removed???? We are living in a country where majority struggle just to get by. It is not just about the petrol; you remove the subsidy gas, fuel, kero etc goes up in price. This makes everything else go up in prices. For crying out loud are they going to force millions of Nigerians to early graves just to satisfy their wallets???? Lets not talk about subsidy just yet, lets leave it as its been and lets talk about social welfare. Yes lets talk about how and what to pay those that are unemployed, the disable, the old, the kids. Lets talk about providing basic infrastructure, electricity, water, roads etc. These are all more important and please put security at the top of that list. Lets not let them touch that subsidy until we are a fully working welfare state. Jonathan and his gang have failed miserably. Kidnapping, robbery, road accidents(bad roads), cholera(bad water), no electricity the list goes on and on. Unfortunately all these kill the poor people so I honestly do not see why he is spending time fighting to remove the fuel subsidy which is the lifeline of the people.
To put it as simple as possible, fuel goes up means bread goes up and that is same for milk, egg, pen, books everything. More inflation. This must only be remove when the economy is much better. We must fight to stop them. Jonathan should step down and take along with him all his gangs in government.

  5. Which country of the world doesn’t practise effective subsidy in one way or the other? ‘Oil & Gas’ is the only item that has been effectively subsidized by the FG of Nigeria over the past two decades. How can a government be more wicked, insensitive and undirectional than the Nigerian government of today, who would withdraw an unverified, and perhaps, inflated subsidy from the most ‘general and crucial’ commodity that directly and totally affects the standard of living of the poor but general citizens of her country, knowing fully well that our minium wage of N18,000 will deepen the grave of the poor and average citizen of this country upon fuel subsidy removal? It is unfortunate that one man with his entourage of about 200 people impose an unpleasant measure on a nation of over 170 million people, and hence, determine the fate of over 250 ethnic colony. “Reverse the fuel pump price to N65, consult with Nigerians at all levels of governance, and do exactly what we say” – Lekan Famisa.

  10. @Damochy
You should be really ashamed to leave such a comment. What @The creek voice was saying is very correct. Why do you think the politicians are in the control seat over us. We are more than 150 million people but we as a people are very weak. When Niger Delta was passing through some of the most troubled times in our history just because they wanted a better use of our resources the rest of Nigerians left them on their own with the Government deploying the military to their street. Every Nigerian should have been out in the street to stop the killings of our citizens. There is nothing like yoruba, bini, ibo, housa man when it comes to what affects us as a people. There is only a Nigeria and until we accept that we are doomed.
Now as for the man you call your father what exactly did he do??? Did he spend his personal penny on this country??? The man came to power and left it loads richer as a person than what he was prior. If you think just because he is Yoruba or your tribesman or from your state and hence no one should speak odd of him I ask you: Is every road in your little part of Nigeria done? Have you got constant electricity? what is the percentage of the comfortable to the poor??? No body care where whichever leader come from we are one country so shut it. Nigerians should have stood with the Deltans during the struggle and instead of trying to appease them with training and what have you the resolution would have been how to move this country forward and change. If 1 person is killed in Sokoto in as much as this person is a Nigerian we must all, all 150M stand up and condemn it else the next time it will happen to your brother or sister and just as the status quo remains you will be alone too. We need to be able to feel the other’s pain regardless of the distance separating you houses. E.G say the American police shoot an American in New York, you will see demonstration in every state demanding justice that is why they are doing better than we are
